Halloween (2018)

Ok so forget Halloween’s 2-5, The Curse Of Michael Myers, H2O, Resurrection and the two Rob Zombie versions. This one is the real, actual, genuine sequel. Of course timed to coincide with the original’s 40th anniversary and therefore the 50th anniversary of original slaughter of his sister. Who’s sister? Why the infamous Michael Myers (of Click here to read more…

The Conjuring

If you’ve never seen a horror film in your life then I’d say give this one a whirl. But horror connoisseurs will find this film frustratingly predictable as it appears to feast off every cliche in the book.

Sinister

I recall John Carpenter saying he was surprised that no-one had made a film called Halloween. Likewise, I was quite surprised no-one has made a film called Sinister, especially given the vogue to use bold one word titles! And it could scarily have been a film that was built round a good title without any Click here to read more…

Death and the Maiden

I have never seen the play and was keen to find out what all the fuss was about. Having watched a string of play adaptations to film of late I thought it would be the perfect excuse for me to review the film version directed by Roman Polanski. As I’ve mentioned in a previous review, Click here to read more…

Berberian Sound Studio

It was a tweet from Mark Kermode that prompted me to check out this film. Perhaps I had my hopes raised too much. Toby Young stars in this horror drama from writer/director Peter Strickland about an English sound operator who gets a big break at an Italian Sound studio making sound FX for a film. Chernobyl Diaries

In late April 1986, I was out camping with my Scout group. Everthing seemed normal, though at the time there was talk in the media that a cloud of radiation was heading towards England from the East. True story. Because at the same time, in the old USSR a nuclear reactor had gone into meltdown at Chernobyl Click here to read more…

The Woman in Black

The British do the ghost story ever so well, especially if set in olden times in a remote village where locals eye you as a threat. Almost like a Daphne du Maurier of the present day, Susan Hill’s 1983 novel The Woman In Black has had remarkable success. From it’s inclusion in the national syllabus to Click here to read more…

Les Diaboliques

Rated at number 4 on the imdb horror chart I very nearly gave up on this film. But my perseverance was rewarded eventually with some classic suspense and thriller that, rumour has it, inspired Hitchcock’s approach to Psycho. Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, it tells the story of how a woman and her husband’s mistress kill Click here to read more…

The Thing

Kurt Russell stars in John Carpenters’ remake of the 1951 classic, though it is actually more widely recognised as an alternative adaptation of JW Campbell Jnr’s “Who goes there?“. This version is set in US laboratory in the Antarctic (not the North Pole) and is home to a team of researchers who are victims of Click here to read more…
